Silence, I have found, is a state of mind. We only learn silence by removing ourselves from noise. With practice, though, we can achieve silence even within chaos. These silences born of discipline rather than environmental stillness are much more profound than their natural cousins. To be silent in silence is to be a flashlight on a summer afternoon. Silence in chaos, however, is like a candle in a midnight forest.
Stories are for joining the past to the future. Stories are for those late hours in the night when you can’t remember how you got from where you were to where you are. Stories are for eternity, when memory is erased, when there is nothing to remember except the story.
